A brand new collection of short stories.
Join the indomitable detective duo of Sir Maurice Newbury and Miss Veronica Hobbes in the dangerous streets of Victorian London as they battle to solve some of their most challenging cases yet. From the mysterious to the macabre, the supernatural specialist and his determined assistant face plague revenants, murderous peers, mechanical beasts, tentacled leviathans and reanimated pygmies, working alongside Detective Inspector Charles Bainbridge, Newbury’s sometimes nemesis ‘Lady Arkwell’ and the great detective himself, Sherlock Holmes.
This was my first significant collection of short fiction, and the stories included span the entire career of Newbury & Veronica, some predating the events of the first novel, others filling in gaps between them, and others still looking to the future and the handing of the baton to the next generation.
While all of the stories feature either Newbury or Veronica, they also look to expand the universe and bring in other elements of my fictional universe, such as Professor Archibald Angelchrist (who first appeared in my Doctor Who novel, Paradox Lost) and Peter Rutherford (who debuted in the Ghost novel, Ghosts of War).
Here’s a complete list of the stories included, which are listed in chronological order:
The Dark Path
The Hamilton Affair
The Shattered Teacup
What Lies Beneath
The Lady Killer
The Case of the Night Crawler
The Sacrificial Pawn
Strangers from the Sea
The Only Gift Worth Giving
A Rum Affair
A Night, Remembered
The Maharajah’s Star
The Albino’s Shadow
“Mann…paints his characters in vivid, unforgettable strokes.”
